WeightWatchers Employee Sacked For Gaining Weight

A former WeightWatchers leader who was dismissed after she put on three stone is suing  for Unfair Dismissal, it was reported today.

The woman from Brazil weight was 11st 6lb when she was first employed by the  company as a programme coordinator in the capital of Brazil, Sao Paulo.

But she was dismissed for ‘indiscipline’ in 2006 after her weight ballooned to 14st 7lb. The ex-employee took her case to Brazil’s Higher Labour Court claiming damages of £8000 as well as a severance payment.

Weight Watchers argued that one of the conditions of employment was to stay slim to motivate clients to keep slim.

The companies lawyer added that part of the woman’s employment contract included a clause warning that gaining weight would lead to dismissal.

One of the judges hearing the case Judge Jose Pimenta  argued that no employer could make an employee to commit to not gain weight, asking: ‘Did this employee put on weight because she wanted to?’

The Unfair Dismissal hearing continues.
